7 Must-Haves When Your Child Gets Sick

As a parent, it’s our duty to protect our children. Unfortunately, there are just some things that we can’t protect them from. No matter how much we try to instill proper cleaning habits in our kids, they are still bound to get sick. We hate to see when our little ones are in pain. I’ve come up with a list of must-have items that every parent should keep on hand for when these gloomy days arrive.

1. Thermometer

What’s the first thing you do when your child says they don’t feel well? Usually, it’s feeling of the forehead and cheeks to see if they feel warm. Of course, this isn’t a sure way to test their temperature so it’s best to have a thermometer on hand. It’s very important to make sure you have one that is reliable and accurate. ++Deal offers an exceptional Digital Forehead and Ear Thermometer by Gland Electronics.

Gland Digital Forehead and Ear Thermometer

This professional-grade thermometer is suitable for all ages. You can quickly and easily check your child’s temperature on their forehead or in their ear with the infrared probe. 4. Mentholated Topical Ointment

Must-Haves When Caring for a Sick Child with Cold or Flu Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub can be applied to your child’s skin to helps relieve coughing without the side effects that oral cold and cough medicines can cause. It can also be used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains of achy muscles and joints. Experts recommend massaging it onto your child’s chest, where he can smell the menthol from a safe distance. Some warn against using it on children under the age of 2. Vicks VapoRub doesn’t relieve nasal congestion, however, the strong menthol odor of VapoRub tricks your brain, so you feel like you’re breathing through an unclogged nose.

5. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen

Must-Haves When Caring for a Sick Child with Cold or Flu Alternate Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen

For very high or stubborn fevers, alternate between Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil). Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen differ in how they work to treat fever, inflammation, and pain. Acetaminophen is helpful for relieving all kinds of pain and fever, although it doesn’t reduce swelling and inflammation the same targeted way that ibuprofen does. Alternate between the two every 3 to 4 hours to help with the fever. Be sure to read the box first for appropriate dosage for your child or consult your physician.

  1. Its so hard to see our little ones sick! I like all the suggestions you give here – a good quick reference. I especially like the last one about hugs and lots of love – that is really the greatest medicine we can give our kids (even when they are not sick lol).

  2. All of these are great ideas of things to have on hand. We have a similar thermometer for us. We might need to upgrade to a digital forehead and ear thermometer that stores readings like this. Easier to keep track of temperature readings.

  3. Great post! I also like how you list natural remedies that have little or no side effects, unlike medicines. I also love how the humidifiers look. They are so cute, and if I had young kids, I would definitely be considering buying at least one of them.

  4. I feel like our Crane humidifier does not get put away at all during this time of year. Its fun for the kids to look at and I know that it is helping them get over things faster. There is no worse feeling then having a sick child!

  5. It is definitely a good time of year to stock up on all these things so that we can be prepared if the kids get sick. So much easier than scrambling to find everything!

  6. These aren’t things that are must have when a kid gets sick, these are all things I could use when I get sick. I had the flu the week before Christmas, and was miserable. It turns out, even the people who love you don’t want to cuddle when you’re sick as an adult. They just hope you don’t get them sick.

Yes! All of these are an absolute must. I hate when the little ones get sick. In our house when one is feeling ick, all of them feel ick. Not fun with 7 sick littles.

Its a good thing that every one kids & adults should have on hand. As a matter of fact I could use a few of them right now
